House builders, garden designers and landscape architects are helping to shape our future environment. The NHGA recognise and celebrate those achievements and bring the merits of that work to the attention of as many people as possible.

award categories – house builders

1. Best Garden - Family Home (4 + Bedrooms)
This garden will demonstrate a great deal of creativity and flair together with a clear understanding of the relationship between the home, garden and the family.

2. Best Garden - Family Home (2/3 Bedrooms)
Our traditional living space is the perfect focus for innovative garden design and the winner will have created an inspiring outdoor living space.

3. Best Roof / Terrace / Penthouse Garden
Terrace and roof gardens are a testament to the level of creativity that can be achieved in a modern urban living environment, often with very limited space.

4. Best Courtyard Garden
Limited space doesn't have to mean a compromise in quality and creativity. An opportunity to show what can be achieved in a small area no greater than 36m2.

5. Best Garden / Landscape - Brownfield Development
This award is for the house builder that demonstrates the most inspiring, practical and creative regeneration of outdoor space in a typical brownfield setting. Before and after images will be required

6. Best Environmental / Ecological Project
The winner of this award will pay particular attention to the retention and development of natural features on the site and will clearly demonstrate the implementation of a considered plan for the ongoing maintenance and ecology of the project. A garden or landscape designed to improve the environment, harvest and conserve water and other natural resources, respond to the effects of predicted climatic change and attract and support wildlife.

7. Best Communal Garden / Landscape
This award will go to the house builder that has created the very best outdoor living environment for shared use in an urban or rural setting.

8. Best Show House Garden
This award is the only category that will be decided by the consumer with a high profile online voting campaign in Express Newspapers. This garden is an opportunity to impress prospective house buyers with your creativity and flair.

9. Best Garden / Landscape - Overseas Development
This is a great opportunity to show how a warmer climate can offer exciting options such as Mediterranean, desert or tropical style gardens and landscapes.

10. Best Restored Garden / Landscape
This will be an exceptional outdoor space and will illustrate what can be achieved with the significant restoration of an existing rural or urban garden or landscape, probably around a listed building, converted building, historic or derelict property. Before and after images of the garden and/or landscape will be required.

11. Best Landscaped Retirement Development
(Volume Sector)
The judges will be looking for a landscape created by a volume retirement house builder that not only looks good but shows a clear understanding of the special needs of the people buying retirement property.

12. Best Landscaped Retirement Development
(Luxury Sector)
This landscape, created by a low or medium volume specialist house builder, will be an exceptional, inspiring and appropriately functional communal space created around a superior luxury retirement development.

13. Best Landscaped Urban Development
The winner will be the best example of innovative, quality design and the one that demonstrates the most effective, creative and original use of outdoor space in a contemporary urban apartment setting.

14. House Builder of the Year
This award will go to the house builder who in the judge's opinion shows the leading commitment to the creation of a complete living environment, with the development of attractive, innovative, functional, creative and truly inspirational outdoor living space across a range of projects, budgets and property types.

HOUSE BUILDERS MUST SUBMIT EVIDENCE FROM AT LEAST THREE DEVELOPMENTS TO SUPPORT THEIR ENTRY IN CATEGORY 14, HOUSE BUILDER OF THE YEAR. AN ENTRY FEE IS REQUIRED FOR THE HOUSE BUILDER OF THE YEAR CATEGORY AND ALL ENTRIES IN THIS CATEGORY MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AT LEAST ONE ENTRY IN ANOTHER CATEGORY

The winners of the New Homes Garden Awards 2008 will be announced at the Awards Presentation Lunch at the Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington, London on Friday 26th September
