The judging panel for 2008 will be announced later in the year - here are our 2007 judges
David Hoppit
David is the inspiration behind the New Homes Garden Awards and comes from a family steeped in the history of the house building industry. David is a former Daily Telegraph journalist and respected property and gardening writer. David is passionate about the awards initiative and for many years has campaigned for the construction of quality gardens and landscapes around new houses.
Nigel Thorne
Nigel is a chartered landscape architect and a Director of Martha Schwartz in London. His client's include multi-national organisations, local authorities as well as commercial and residential developers. Nigel is the President of the Landscape Institute, a lecturer at Reading University and a respected judge for the Civic Trust Green Flag Awards.
Benedict Van Heems
Benedict has a degree in horticulture and a lifelong passion for plants. He studied at Reading University and worked for many years at a plant nursery. He has given talks as far a field as Tasmania and Oregon in the U.S.A and is now the Editor of the Garden Design Journal.
Mary Bullock
Mary studied garden design at Brooksby Agricultural College and horticulture at the Royal Horticultural Society. Mary has been designing gardens for over 10 years and specialises in using natural materials that blend with their surroundings. Experienced in creating designs for tiny plots to several acres, Mary is a member of the Society of Garden Designers and an RHS silver medal winner.
Anne Jennings
Anne Jennings is a partner in a garden consultancy, design and construction business and a freelance garden writer. She is the author of seven books and regularly contributes to gardening magazines and newspapers. Anne is the former Chief Executive at the Museum of Garden History in London.
Andrew Wilson
Andrew is an award winning garden designer, lecturer and writer based in Surrey, England. Although trained originally as a landscape architect he now combines creating contemporary gardens with teaching garden design and landscape architecture. Andrew lectures internationally and is currently a Course Director at Merrist Wood College near Guildford and a Director of The Tutor Group, a responsive teaching organisation based in Surrey. He writes a regular column for Gardens Illustrated and is also a Fellow and a former Chairman of the Society of Garden Designers.
Anthony Paul
Anthony has practiced as a garden designer for over 30 years and is known for his innovative and contemporary work. Anthony has designed gardens here in Britain as well as New Zealand, Australia, Africa, France and Switzerland. His work includes commissions for blue chip organisation for which he has won a Civic Trust Award. Anthony is a member of the Society of Garden Designers and an international award winning designer.
Imtiaz Farookhi
Imtiaz Farookhi has been the Chief Executive of the NHBC (National House Building Council) since 1997. He was previously Chief Executive of Leicester City Council where he led the successful regeneration of the city centre. Until recently, he served on the national Learning and Skills Council, and was a founder member of the Environment Agency. He currently serves as a member of the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation and is a member the Governing Board of the British Board of Agrement (BBA).
Jill Fenwick
Jill Fenwick is member of the Society of Garden Designers and has been designing gardens for the past eighteen years. She graduated from St Martin's School of Art with a degree in Illustration but always had a passion for designing gardens. Jill first exhibited at the Hampton Court Flower Show in 1990, and continued to exhibit and win awards over the following eleven years. Recently, four of Jill's gardens have been featured on 'Garden Makers' on Sky TV. A winner of several BALI awards, recent projects include a sustainable show garden at The Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales and in 2008 one of her designs will be built for the RHS at Wisley, Surrey.
John Brookes
John has run his own successful award winning garden design practice since 1964 and is internationally renowned for his work. He is an author, lecturer, television and radio presenter and a Chelsea Gold Medal winner on no less than four occasions. He lectures in garden design, landscape design and horticulture at the Royal Botanical Garden in Kew, Institute of Park Administration and Regent Street Polytechnic. He is a Fellow and former Chairman of the Society of Garden Designers.
Julia Fogg
Julia has exhibited at Royal Horticultural Society flower shows and has numerous awards for show gardens. As well as running her own garden design practice Julia is a lecturer, author and broadcaster and currently teaches at the University of Greenwich. She holds a degree in landscape architecture is a member of the Society of Garden Designers and a former Director of the Garden Design Faculty at the Inchbald School of Garden Design.
Lucy Huntington
Lucy Huntington is a highly qualified Horticulturalist and Garden Designer with over 35 years in her own design practice and is a Fellow of the Society of Garden Designers. Her work has included a wide range of private gardens as well as larger land-scape projects. As a consultant and lecturer she has travelled and worked through-out the U.K. and has also lectured and has clients in the U.S.A. and Australia.
Mark Laurence
Mark has a lifelong background in landscape working as an arboriculturalist, landscape contractor and garden designer. Over the last 20 years mark has explored new ways of working that are sensitive to the environment to produce spaces that are exciting and spiritually nurturing. He has also pioneered methods of using bio-filtration to purify ornamental ponds and household grey water. Mark has designed a sustainable landscape for Grand Designs Live at Excel and been commissioned by the London School of Economics to devise a sustainable landscape for the entire campus and is a member of the Society of Garden Designers.
Paul Cowell
Paul runs his own award winning garden design practice in Surrey. Paul studied garden design at Merrist Wood College and has a degree in landscape architecture from Greenwich University. Paul is a board member of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) and a member of the Society of Garden Designers.
Jo Weston
Jo became Marketing Manager of the Home Builders Federation in 2005 following a number of years working for leading house builders and building suppliers. In addition to her work for the HBF Jo, overseas the management of the New Homes Marketing Board, a sister organisation to the HBF, which is currently being re-launched alongside the appointment of a new Chairman, former Barratt boss David Pretty.
Fiona Stephenson
An award-winning garden designer in London and the South East for over 20 years, Fiona has facilitated over 300 garden and landscape schemes in both the residential and commercial domain. Most recently she has won a Silver Gilt award at 2007 Hampton Court Palace Flower Show with 'Growing Together' as well as designing the landscape scheme at 199-209 Kings Road Chelsea, which has just been awarded the RBKC Environmental Award 2007 for best Restoration and Conversion |
